Kirkuk / Bai Hassan / Khabbaz / Qara Chauq

This IPD image is just one RSDD-H view of the giant and super-giant fields of northern Iraq and Kurdistan. The strong dark anomalies coincide with the proven fields of Kirkuk, Bai Hassan, Khabbaz, Jambur and Qara Chauq. The pale / green tone areas are Low Prospectivity Zones and the obvious cross-cutting valley provides a natural topographic “negative interference” zone to the hydrocarbon  patterns.  Southern and central parts of Kirkuk field look depleted / exploited (like it is).   In some cases there is recognised strong topographic relief in the anomalous areas but not in all. It is considered that the anomalies are a direct expression of the trapped sub-surface hydrocarbons. It is also apparent that there are undelineated field extensions such as NW Qara Chauq.

This example is just a small excerpt from an “Atlas of Zagros Fold Belt Petroleum Fields and Prospects in Kurdistan and Northern Iraq ” that Scotforth is putting together. The Atlas –including image displays of other recent discoveries such as Tawke, Miran and TaqTaq-  portrays with “new eyes” the prolific nature of this hydrocarbon province. More importantly, it is predicting further giant and super-giant discoveries in a series of site-specific locations on both licensed and available lands.
